On January 25, 2015, voice actor Sean Connolly sat inside the Vue cinema at Leicester Square, London, watching the European premiere of Shaun the Sheep Movie — a film in which he had voiced ten characters. A couple of rows to his left sat Ed Sheeran, attending the premiere as a guest. Connolly’s daughter Erin, a devoted Sheeran fan, had no idea the singer was there until the screening was already over. The family only learned the truth at the post-screening reception, by which point Sheeran was out of reach.
That missed encounter is the real connection between Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran. They were never collaborators, co-stars, or acquaintances — just two people in the same room, at the same event, without ever speaking. Connolly later turned the story into an endearing blog post titled “A Close Shave with Ed Sheeran,” borrowing the name of the 1995 Wallace & Gromit short that first introduced the character of Shaun the Sheep.
The Voice Actor Behind Ten Characters
Sean Connolly is a British actor and voice artist raised in Derbyshire, England, by Anglo-Irish parents. He trained at the Birmingham School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art and has worked in theatre, television, and voice performance for close to four decades. His screen credits include roles in The Bill, Doctors, and the Channel 4 drama No Angels, while his voice work spans BBC Radio — including a recurring role as Keith Horrobin in The Archers — and several animated productions.
His association with Aardman Animations is extensive. He voiced 30 characters across 13 episodes of the claymation series Rex the Runt, and when the Bristol-based studio brought Shaun the Sheep to the big screen in 2015, Connolly recorded ten character voices for the film. According to cast credits and his own IMDb profile, these included the Maître D’, a Golfer, and various Stylists. He later voiced Hector the Head Llama in the BBC Christmas special Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas, which aired on Boxing Day 2015.
The Shaun the Sheep Movie went on to receive nominations for the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Animated Feature in 2016. For Connolly, a voice actor who typically records his parts alone in a studio, the premiere was a rare chance to meet fellow cast members in person — including Justin Fletcher, who voices Shaun, and co-director Richard Starzak.
“Just a Couple of Rows to Our Left”
Connolly attended the premiere with his wife, actress Bella Hamblin, and their daughter Erin. The event featured a green carpet instead of the traditional red, themed to match the film’s pastoral setting. On his personal blog, he described walking the carpet, taking family photos, and settling into their seats — where they realized they were sitting directly in front of Justin Fletcher.
The Ed Sheeran chapter of the evening came as a shock. Connolly wrote that the family “only found out AFTERWARDS at the post screening party that he was there, in the same cinema screen, just a couple of rows to our left.” The post-screening reception took place at the Criterion Restaurant in Piccadilly. Getty Images from that night independently confirm Sheeran’s presence, with credited photographs showing the singer alongside Aardman co-founder Nick Park on the carpet. ITV News also reported Sheeran among the celebrity guests.
For Erin Connolly, who according to her father’s blog had previously seen Sheeran perform at Madison Square Garden in New York, the missed meeting was a particular disappointment. Connolly noted he had “the perfect reason to say hi,” given his involvement in the film, but it simply didn’t happen. He even tried reaching Sheeran through Twitter afterward, joking that with 12.3 million followers at the time, his message was unlikely to get through.

Why the Names Appear Together Online
The pairing of “Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran” in search results stems almost entirely from this single event. Several entertainment websites have since published articles about the connection, some framing it as a mystery or implying a deeper relationship. In reality, the link is straightforward: one man worked on the film, the other attended its premiere, and a charming near-miss produced a blog post that has circulated online for over a decade.
Sheeran was not a voice performer in the film, and there is no documented evidence that the two have met at any point before or since the premiere.
A Different Connolly in Ed Sheeran’s World
One possible source of confusion is the surname. Nathan Connolly, the guitarist of Snow Patrol, has a genuine and well-documented musical connection to Ed Sheeran — the two have performed and appeared together in contexts tied to the music industry. Sean Connolly, the voice actor from Derbyshire, is an entirely different person with no known link to Sheeran beyond the January 2015 premiere.
